Secrets
"I can't marry you." I blinked rapidly
to hold back the tears that threatened to fall.
His eyes widened and his mouth went slack. "What?
Baby! Why not? I thought you loved me?"
My heart did an imitation of a blowfish, and instead of
butterflies, I had baby stingrays in my tummy. He thought
I didn't love him. I whispered, "I do love you.
I more than love you. From a whisper, my voice gained in intensity,
"Damn it, I'm crazy about you! It's just
that I possess a rare gene in my genetic makeup that could
be passed on to our babies. And to be honest, I'm not
sure how you'd feel about our children being different."
A strange expression flitted over my lover's face,
but was gone before I could analyze it. "Sweetheart,
If itd make you feel better, I could do a series of tests
and find out if I share any of those latent genes. If so, we
could ask a geneticist about the probabilities of passing
it along to our children. Why don't you just tell me
what the problem is?"
I let my breath out in staccato bursts and was surprised
that my voice only shook a little. Let's go for a swim,
hmm?
Drawing his brows close together, he tilted his head sideways
and stared at me. Damn, he was adorable. Now?
I scrunched up my face and hesitated, Um, yeah, well...come
on, just humor me. I had to give him credit, he being very
patient with me.
Okay, Baby. He took his jeans off and put on a pareau.
I lagged a few steps behind as we made our way to the beach,
and watched him walk. His buttocks and legs were well-shaped.
I sighed. I had always been a sucker for a cute ass and great
legs. We dropped our pareaus and waded into the ocean. Nudity
wasn't a problem. This stretch of beach was private;
it and the house had been in my family's possession
for centuries.
"Hun?" I smiled. My smile was about as real
as a silk flower. He smiled back. His smile was real. It was
the kind of smile that could make a woman forget the Never
sleep with a man on the first date rule.
Yes, my love?
Wait here just a moment. I swam a bit farther away from
him softly singing to myself. After a few minutes, I turned
around and beckoned with my hand. I could see his eyes widen
when he was close enough to discern my body beneath the water.
Then his face became expressionless.
Without a word, he turned from me and swam away. Then he
stopped and stared at me. He treaded water and seemed to
be muttering. I made a move to swim towards him but he stopped
me. Just give me a second, okay?
His hair was sticking up in funny little clumps like devil
horns and in spite of my misery I started to giggle. My giggles
turned into braying laughter. He ignored me. That made
me laugh more.
He gave me a funny look. He had stopped talking to himself.
Suddenly, he swam quickly towards me. Now it was my turn
for my jaw to drop open and stare in shock. I screamed and
threw my arms around his neck. I nuzzled him, then nipped
the side of his neck. And just when were you planning on
telling me?
That my darling, is now a moot point. So, will you marry
me?
Yes, I'll marry you. I ducked his head under the water.
When he came back up, I laughed. I always did have a weakness
for a man with a nice tail.
